Stolen identities

The MoneyHelper website has a page dedicated to the issue of identity fraud, with tips of how to protect yourself from criminals who can open bank accounts, obtain credit cards or buy things in your name, just with a few personal details such as your date of birth and maiden name.

As well as being careful not to publish personal details online, you should also keep debit/credit cards and ID separate from your mobile phone, and be sure to shred any letters you receive from banks or bills. Criminals can piece together information from a variety of sources in order to assume your identity – so don’t give them the opportunity.

If the worst should happen and you fall victim to identity fraud, take a look at the online guide, Identity theft and scams: how to get your money back.
