Urgent update for pensioners of the Sainsbury’s Pension Scheme (Sainsbury’s Section)

Sainsbury’s Section pensioners are paid every four weeks – which means 13 payments a year. However, every 20 years or so, because of how the payment dates fall, our payroll system produces a 14th payment (known in the industry as a ‘week 56 payment’).

This is a known issue which HMRC is aware of, and it also affects employees who are paid weekly or fortnightly.

As a result of this ‘week 56 payment’, you may end up paying the incorrect amount of tax, even though we have processed your PAYE correctly and in line with HMRC rules. Unfortunately, this is unavoidable and so HMRC may get in touch with you to reclaim any tax owed.

We cannot discuss your personal tax issues with HMRC, and we request that you speak to them directly if you have any queries about tax underpayments. HMRC’s advice is to check your P60 for the week 56 indicator before making contact with them.

Here are the contact details for the Tax Office that deals with Sainsbury’s Pension Scheme enquiries, as well as the PAYE reference number that you will need to quote:
